SCIENTIST – ACADEMIC AFFAIRS & SCIENCE COMMUNICATION

POSITION SUMMARY

The Scientist (Academic Affairs and Science Communication) will be attached to the Institute Development Division of the Director's Secretariat. The selected person will be responsible for all academic services; provides leadership in development of academic programs, policy formulation, program planning, and evaluation; keeps abreast of trends and changes in higher education; works for institutional vision, survival, stability, growth, and excellence; provides a connection between administration and faculty; serves as catalyst to create a climate conducive to scholarly research in an atmosphere committed to the mandates of the institute and the Department of Biotechnology. This will be first a five-year position at the Scientist E1 or E-2 level renewable into a fully tenured position following a positive performance evaluation.

MINIMUM ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

1) PhD in Biotechnology or Life Sciences.
2)Excellent track record in laboratory research evidenced by high impact peer reviewed publications

ADDITIONAL DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Current knowledge and experience in higher education
2. Senior administrative experience in higher education - preferred and strongly desired
3. Commitment to continuous improvement of teaching and learning
4. Demonstrated leadership and managerial skills
5. Ability to exercise a collaborative style of management
6. Strong team building skills and the ability to work effectively and collegially with others
7. Highly developed skills in written and oral communication, human relations, and creative problem solving

10. Support for breadth of programs at a comprehensive research center

RESPONSIBILITIES:

PhD and Master's Curriculum

  • Provides leadership for curriculum development and evaluation based on goals and objectives including outcomes measurement;
  • Monitors and evaluates quality and cost effectiveness of academic
  • Evaluates course enrollment trends;
  • Initiates contacts and maintains ongoing relationships with other research institutes and universities for curriculum trends and consortia arrangements;
  • Maintains contact, prepares, and submits curricular materials to external agencies) for review and approval
  • Provides leadership for the accreditation processes of the institute.
  • With the Deans Office, prepares and evaluates planning materials, academic calendar, and operational guidelines;
  • Seeks sources of funding and writes grants for funding for curriculum development and improvement
  • Monitors faculty workloads
  • Provides leadership for instructional improvement through library resources, audio-visual resources, academic computing, and technology to support student learning;
  • Conferences with students
  • Conferences with faculty
  • Gives leadership to strategic planning in the academic area

Reports and Publications

  • Prepares agenda for faculty meetings
  • Prepares faculty meeting schedule
  • Supervises preparation of Faculty Bulletin
  • Serves as liaison with teaching faculty
  • Prepares miscellaneous reports and responses for requests from external sources
  • Coordinates preparation of annual reports

    Communication

  • Works toward fair, open, and clear communication with faculty
  • Maintains positive relationships with both internal and external constituencies
  • Serves as a "linking-pin" between administration and faculty, responsible for interpreting and implementing policies and regulations
